MILLICENT HUNGWE
Police are still hunting for Morgen Gwazira (33), who is accused of brutally murdering his wife Liliosa Gwenhamo (34) before burning her body using firewood, petrol, and battery acid on October 12 at Machingambi Village under Chief Mugabe in Masvingo.
According to sources close to the family, Liliosa, originally from Chief Mapanzure’s area, had reportedly been in a strained relationship with Gwazira.
The two traditional leaders share a boundary, and the shocking incident has left both communities in disbelief.
In a traditional act of reparation, a dare (chiefs court) was held involving both families, where it was agreed that 30 cattle must be paid to the Gwenhamo family as compensation for the heinous crime.
However, reports indicate that Liliosa’s body remains are still in Harare.
The family has said that the 30 cattle must be handed over before the burial.
ZRP Masvingo Province deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu told The Midweek Watch that the suspect is still on the run.
He said while traditional culture requires reparations, no burial should be stopped based on failure to pay cattle, stating that “delaying burial for compensation purposes can be considered a criminal act of extortion.”
Assistant Inspector Patinyu said dialogue through the chiefs would ensure that any cultural dues are settled after the burial.
He urged the public to assist in bringing justice, if anyone has information or spots Morgen Gwazira, to please report immediately to the nearest police station.
The children are currently under the care of relatives, with calls for counselling and public support with food, clothes and money for school fees.
