MASVINGO – The conspicuous absence by Zimbabwe’s who is who in the music and arts industry has left many friends and relatives who attended Garikai Mapanzure aka Garry’s funeral with more questions than answers.

The people who attended the funeral proceedings thought this was the perfect moment for the sector to bid a befitting send-off to one of their own.

The Wapunza hit maker died last week after he was involved in a horrific car accident along Masvingo – Beitbridge road at Clipsham heights and was buried on Sunday at Lawn Cemetery in Masvingo City.

In that regard, the public and other artists reacted with different emotions to the absence of top artists.

Zanu PF Masvingo Province Youth League secretary, Charles Munganasa blasted all the artists who snubbed the funeral and went on to condemn them from performing in Masvingo anymore amid the preparations of the Lake October Festival which is scheduled for this coming weekend.

“As an artist, I am very disappointed by how Zimbabwean artists snubbed their counterpart’s funeral and to make matters worse everyone noticed the gap by such an act, we have lost our Ubuntu/Hunhu as people by thinking posting him on social media handles will do the trick”, said a visibly irate Munganasa.

“We no longer want any artists outside Masvingo to come and perform in our province because they have actually shown us that they do not like our kind by not attending Garry’s funeral”.

United Kingdom-based socialite and businessperson Olinda Chapel also slammed Zimbabwean musicians for failing to show up at the late singer’s funeral.

“I have a very stupid question 🙋‍♀️ I watched Garry’s funeral, and am I the only one who noticed his colleagues in the industry were missing? I mean kasi mu music industry hamunobata maoko? All those pics you were posting with him were just for clout? Well, I hope vachaenda havo kunobata maoko mazuva anotevera.”

At Garry Mapanzure’s funeral, there were only two musicians: Hilary Ngaakudzwe Chipunza aka Hillzy and one Masvingo-based artist popularly known as Mr Candy.

The rest were conspicuous by their absence despite posting Garry widely on their social media pages.

Mukudzei Mukombe aka Jah Prayzah wore a white t-shirt with Garry’s portrait and a hand band for the late artist and also posted on his Facebook account “Tinotenda nekutivaraidza. Music tichasara nayo tigoramba tichiitamba pamwe nekudzidza kubva kwairi nekusingaperi. Ndinoti Mweya wako ngauzorore murugare my brother”.

Sylvester Chizanga aka Freeman HKD Boss also posted a RIP message on his Facebook account “Haaa warwadzisa wangu ! Rest Easy my King. Ndokwaive kuonekana uku ???”

Braveman Chizvino Mwanza aka Baba Harare also posted on his Facebook account and said; “Semvura wakauya ukatonhodza zvino waerera. Zorora murugare Wezhira”.

Tawanda Mumanyi aka Seh Calaz also posted in disgust of how people react to people when they die but when they are still alive, they do not show care.

Rip Gary superstar may your family be comforted waenda nenzira inorwadza, you will be appreciated more usisipo, it’s sad kuti vanhu ndo zvatiri not in zim chete but the pasi rese, tokusimbisa zvekuti unoita kunge uchamuka wafa, Urimupenyu inenge ingori, haa mazuvano dzanyarara, apera dzangovee nharo. Mazuvano ini hangu I dont expect much from people, one way or the other mune musi wamuchagara pasi listening to all the songs you bluetick today, haa ndarwadziwa, zvakunzi inga zvai togona nhai, yet mweya nenyama Pazvaive pamwe chete kwaingova kushoropodza nekudzikisirana#iwetaurisaiwe#takaipfuura#siyaimwanaaende”.

Mudiwa Mutandwa aka Mudiwa Hood also became defensive on his Facebook account mentioning that he was also burying his sister 300km away from Masvingo but he would have wanted to go to Garry’s funeral.

“I was burying my own sister same time as Garry’s funeral, would have loved to attend but it was 300km away but semunhu afirwawo guva remwana wamai vangu ndairisira vatorwa here, when Gary was alive, I gave him everythin he asked”.

Zimbabweans also expressed pain online at how artists decided to shun Garry Mapanzure.

Louisa:

“Hillzy na Mr Candy are the realest the rest rubbish…vamwe nekutomupa ma tribute kukadoma uko kutadza kubva vadarikira kuenda kunhamo.”

Tracey:

“Guys, be fair, most artists had commitments like shows on the day, a few are overseas, etc. kunobata maoko kune timeframe here. Family was organised and burial was quicker so must not have made it possible for people to clear their calendars, etc. I’m sure people will continue kunobata maoko but because they didn’t make it to the burial, havana rudo etc. We need to manage our expectations of people and not pass judgements with limited understanding of individual circumstances.”

Ugogo:

“Very sad I’m glad I’m not the only one who was asking the question to myself.”

Dephy:

“Varikuti vangavarikushow ratove drama havazoenda vese kushow Uru rufu hapangashayike a crew rayienda kuno Mira mirawo You’re very right Mai Nandi.”

Udine:

“Zvakaoma people are fake out there. Big up to Hillzy and Mr Candy.”
