Miner electrocuted 80m underground

MUTARE-SIMBARASHE TAGWIREI (33) from Village 33 Ruvi, Mt Zuma in Odzi under Chief Mararnge was electrocuted while connecting a submersible pump 80m underground.

The incident happened on March 6 at Daydawn II Mine in Village 17, Odzi in Chief Marange’s area at around 9am.

Simbarashe was at the mine with his workmate, John Mutere (54) of Village 18 Mt Zuma, Odzi when they decided to connect the submersible pump underground.

Simbarashe went down to connect the pump to a diesel run generator when he was electrocuted and died on the spot.

After about 10 minutes while underground, John called out Simbarashe to find out if the pump had started working but there was no answer.

John went down to check on his workmate only to discover that he had been electrocuted.

He informed other workmates and they retrieved the body and reported the matter to the police.

Manicaland Province police acting spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the body is at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for postmortem while investigations are in progress.
