Mberengwa teen dies in train accident

MBERENGWA- A 19 year -old boy from Mberengwa died after being run over by a train while walking along the railway line.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred on March 5, 2026 around 0245 hours along a railway line near the 86km peg between Poland Village in Mberengwa and Ngezi in Zvishavane.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms receiving a report of sudden death in which a 19 – year old man died after being run over by a train. The incident occurred on March 5, 2026 around 0245 hours in Mberengwa,” he said.

The deceased has been identified as Author Nkiwani (19) of Village Chatira under Chief Mataruse in Mberengwa.

According to police, Donald Tachiona (41) was operating a goods train travelling from Rutenga to Somabhula when he noticed Nkiwani lying face down across the railway line.

Inspector Mahoko said the train driver sounded the locomotive horn in an attempt to alert the young man, but he did not respond.

“The driver tried to warn him by sounding the horn, but the now deceased did not move from the railway line,” he said.

The train failed to stop in time and ran over the victim, resulting in fatal injuries.

He urged members of the public to avoid sitting or lying on railway lines, warning that trains cannot stop quickly once they are in motion.

“We are appealing to members of the public to avoid sitting or lying in railway lines. Committing suicide should never be taken as a way of solving problems,” he said.
