Mberengwa minors drown picking n’ii in disused fishpond

MBERENGWA- The Mataga community is mourning the tragic loss of two minors who drowned in a disused fish pond while collecting n’ii fruits at a deserted homestead.

Midlands Province ZRP spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred in Maduveko Village on 15 February, 2025.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a case of sudden death where two children drowned in a disused pond in Mberengwa,” he said

According to Mahoko, the two minors, a 9 -year -old girl and a four -year -old boy were picking n’ii fruits . Some of the fruits fell into the water and in their attempt to retrieve them, the children dived into the pond and failed to make it out alive.

The incident left the community shell-shocked with villagers calling for increased awareness on child safety and the need to protect disused water sources.

Mahoko urged members of the public to educate their children on the dangers of playing near water bodies especially during the rainy season.
