Masvingo city with its new rehabilitated road from Beit- Bridge to Harare has brought civilisation to the ancient city. Fort Victoria as it was formerly called was a fort built to defend threats against the Pioneer Column.
If you are conversant with Masvingo town, next to the Masvingo High Court is the tower where the maxim gun was installed to repel would be attackers to the column. Masvingo province boasts of many recreational facilities like the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Nyuni Mountain Lodges, Lake Mutirikwi( Kyle Dam), Tokwe- Mukorsi Dam, Great Zimbabwe Hotel, Gonarezhou National Park, Hippo Valley and Triangle sugar mills, Malilangwe Trust, etc. All these facilities for them to operate efficiently they need a well balanced administrative town, that’s where Masvingo town comes in as the fulcrum.
New buildings like Zhirahuru Complex, Junior Complex, OK Bazzars, OK Mart, Pick n Pay and some under construction make me Proudly Victorian( Muvhitori). Most news and debates in Zimbabwe are polarized because of politics. The polarization can easily be picked in social media groups like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. If you hail the President of Zimbabwe on certain achievements, you are labelled a bootlicker. And if you hail Nelson Chamisa for a good move, you are labelled a sell- out. Please let’s copy and paste from our European brothers, they devote 10% of their time on politics and the remainder on nation building.
I would like to thank the current government for improving our landscapes. Roads have been rehabilitated in many corners of the country and the job is still work in progress. I think l am regressing from my topic. Masvingo urban is run by the young mayor Cllr. Maboke, and a very competent town clerk Engineer Mukaratirwa. These guys are making Masvingo work again, although we have some water challenges here and there, l think the city fathers are working flat out to fix the Bushmead electricity challenges. In a telltale sign of professionalism, the city fathers always make announcements in advance of impending challenges. Refuse collection timetables are flighted on social media ( Wozodei? What more else would you ask for). They have learnt to use technology to connect with residents through social media platforms, to better their livelihoods. Well done Mr Maboke and Mukaratirwa, good leaders mix with the ordinary people, hearing their grievances and reacting to them. To rap up this short monologue, let me ask the city fathers to install traffic lights at the junctions of OK Bazaars, N. Richards’ Croco Motors, and Balmain Stores. Together as a team, we wanna make Masvingo town, a modern metropolis.
