Masvingo teams in weekend mixed fortunes

Masvingo football teams continue with their eye for better fortunes in the Pacific Storm ZIFA Eastern Region Soccer League as the season draws closer to its conclusion.

Masvingo United FC secured a vital 1-0 away win against stubborn Mutare City Rovers at Sakubva Stadium on Friday. Hillary Jeke’s 44th-minute header proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter pitting one of the most supported teams in the league.

 The win keeps Masvingo United in the promotion race, sitting second on the log with 48 points just three behind log leaders FC Hunters, both with 20 games played.

 Tenax CS FC remains a serious threat sitting on third place with 44 points and two games in hand which could prove decisive in the title race.

With just eight games remaining, Masvingo United Football Club’s push for PSL promotion is still within reach, making every point crucial going forward.

Meanwhile, FC Wangu Mazodze saw their winning streak coming to screeching halt when they lost to log toppres FC Hunters, 2-1 at Rudhaka Stadium.

Despite a strong second-half performance and a consolation goal, the Kingdom Boys couldn’t find an equaliser. They now sit eighth with 25 points.

Great Zimbabwe University FC suffered another defeat with a 1-0 loss to Destiny Stars FC their third consecutive defeat at Gaths Mine Stadium. The Students are now 12th on the table with 17 points, slipping further toward the relegation zone.

There was sweet news for Renco Mine Football Club who thumped Rusitu Tigers FC 4-1 at Maramba Stadium. The impressive win was their second of the season lifting them from the bottom to 14th place with 11 points as they are looking to escape from the relegation zone.

Looking Ahead

FC Wangu Mazodze will host Tenax CS FC on Saturday at Mucheke Stadium in a crucial encounter that may boost Una Una’s chances of promotion into the elite league.

Masvingo United FC faces Great Zimbabwe University FC in a local derby on Sunday at Mucheke Stadium, a clash dubbed the Match of the Month.

Renco Mine FC will travel to face former premier league outfit, Buffaloes FC aiming to build on their recent momentum.
