MILLICENT HUNGWE
MASVINGO – An exciting showcase of culinary skill and academic prowess is underway in Masvingo Province, where young learners from all seven districts are competing in the Gastronomy Reality Game Show and Quiz Challenge, proudly sponsored by the First Lady, Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.
Running from June 24 to July 1, the event has brought together primary school pupils from Chivi, Masvingo, Mwenezi, Chiredzi, Gutu, Bikita, and Zaka districts for an educational and entertaining experience centered on food preparation and academic knowledge.
The Gastronomy segment, which comes to an end today, has captured the imagination of many, as young chefs from grade 5 to 7 battled it out in the kitchen arena.
According to James Nyamaropa, a Research Officer from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, each represented school had a team of three students who were challenged to prepare a district-based menu, complete with a starter, main course, and dessert—all within a tight 45-minute window.
“What makes this competition unique,” said Nyamaropa, “is that the children use traditional methods, they begin by lighting a fire with grass and firewood, from that point, the judging starts, culinary creativity, teamwork, food presentation, and communication all play a vital role in scoring.”
Safety has been a priority throughout the event, a trained first aid medic has been on standby, ensuring that any minor injuries like cuts or burns are quickly attended to.
“We take every precaution so that the children can compete in a secure environment,” Nyamaropa added.
Three experienced judges have been evaluating each team on a 300-mark scale, and the group with the highest score will go on to represent Masvingo Province in the national finals in Harare.
Christopher Jaji, emphasized the importance of focus and independence during the cooking sessions.
“The children’s teachers are not allowed inside the preparation area during the competition, this gives the learners space to think on their own and build confidence,” he said.
True to Amai Mnangagwa’s commitment to inclusivity, the competition has also welcomed deaf students, ensuring that every child, regardless of ability gets an opportunity to shine.
As the curtain comes down on the gastronomic challenge today, anticipation is already building for the Quiz Competition, which kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, June 28.
Students will shift gears from cooking to showcasing their knowledge in subjects ranging from history and science to current affairs.
With its combination of traditional cooking skills, education, and inclusive participation, the Gastronomy Reality Game Show and Quiz of Masvingo Province is not only nurturing young talent but also creating unforgettable moments in the lives of Zimbabwe’s future leaders.
