MIDWEEK WATCH REPORTER
MASVINGO-One of the youngest and visionary local authority leaders in the country Masvingo City Mayor, Cllr Collen Maboke has superintended the successful completion of nine major projects in the past four years.
Cllr Maboke who was elected Mayor towards the end of 2018 had by 2022 successfully completed the construction of one of the most critical health centers in the high-density area of Mucheke, Runyararo West Clinic through devolution funds.
What makes Runyararo West Clinic critical and unique is that it does not only offer basic health services, but with the scourge of mental health caused by an upsurge in the abuse of drugs mainly by the youth, it also has services in that regard.
“The opening of Runyararo West Clinic was a game changer for us here as we are no longer walking long distances to the nearest health facility.
“We also appreciate that the clinic offers mental health services to the residents, this comes as a relief to the people especially considering that a lot of young people are suffering from that disease which is mainly caused by the abuse of drugs, we hear that Ngomahuru Hospital is full, Runyararo West Clinic will go long way in filling the gap,” said Janet Kadzedzereka popularly known as Dread.
Mayor Maboke also made history when he oversaw the construction of Rujeko Secondary School, the first ever Council owned secondary school in the ancient city.
The school started taking in students in 2022 and the fourth block is almost complete in preparation for the second term which will see more students being enrolled.
Cllr Maboke has also seen the relocation of the dumpsite from Mucheke West to state of the art Campria, which brought relief to residents who had been for years complaining about flies and bad odor from the old dumpsite. The project was done at a cost of over ZW$50million.
The long awaited Mucheke Trunk sewer which will see Victoria Range residents being connected and an improved sewer system for the City, is at 78% completion.
To add splendor to the ancient city, which is in partnership with a Germany City, Kernen, a park was set up as one enters the CBD using the Beitbridge Road.
Cllr Maboke personally saw to it that, the oldest orphanage in Masvingo, Alpha Cottages, which was bedeviled by abuse of office and mismanagement by officials who had overstayed at the home was cleaned and is now run by a new team as per statutes.
Residential stands in Pangolin and Runyararo area have been serviced and those who were allocated have started putting up structures.
At a cost of ZW$17million Oliver Street commercial stands were also serviced as per the requirements of the Act on new developments.
A street lighting levy was introduced and street lights are being repaired to reduce night muggings and add beauty to the City as well as rehabilitation of roads which had been neglected for years.
The Mayor’s sterling work is also testified through the number of accolades that the management team at the Civic Centre has won, recently the Town Clerk, Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa and City spokesperson were recipients of the coveted Megafest Business awards for Masvingo Region.
