Massive drop in haulage traffic at Beitbridge Post

Date:

MIDWEEK REPORTER

There has been a significant drop in haulage traffic at the busiest port of entry in the country, Beitbridge Border Post due to ‘usury’ fees allegedly charged by Zimborders.

Zimborders is managing the Beitbridge Border Post as part of the public private partnership agreement entred into to upgrade the port of entry and the company is allegedly charging US$206 per haulage truck that passes through it.

The upgraded Beitbridge Border Post.

This fee is said to be driving away haulage trucks and they now prefer to go through Mutare’s Forbes Border Post which does not charge anything for haulage trucks besides the normal fees paid.

“Beside paying the usual charges, Zimborders charges US206 extra and this has seen haulage trucks preferring to use the Mozambican route into neighbouring countries as they charge much less.

“We used to have an average of 1 500 trucks passing through the border post on daily basis, but that has gone down to 900 as most now prefer Mozambican route through Forbes Border Post in Mutare which is financially favourable,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
