MASVINGO RURAL-Before the tears had barely dried on the chicks of Masimba Construction workers following the tragic death of one of their own in an accident another employee committed suicide by throwing himself into a moving car.
Emmanuel Chihanga (39) was hit by a Toyota twin cab driving towards Harare on Saturday morning and thrown out of the main road after the alert driver avoided him as he had thrown himself onto the tarmac.
Chihanga is believed to have picked himself up and went on to throw himself again into an oncoming Honda Fit after failing in his first attempt to end his life.
“As I was driving to Harare I saw someone flying into my car and I avoided running over him but he was hit by the door and thrown onto the edge of the road. I did not stop as I suspected that they could be robbers and proceeded to the toll gate to report to the police. When we came back with the police we found the guy I a pool of blood on the tarmac and learnt that he was run over by a Honda Fit,” said the driver of the Toyota twin cab.
Masvingo Province deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu confirmed the fatal accident without providing details.
“We have a fatal road accident where Emmanuel Chihanga, 39, of Summerton died on the spot. He was run over at the 270km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road. That is the only information we have so far” Patinyu told The Midweek Watch.
Last week Wellington Dhuve who was accidentally crushed to death at Chimusana bridge site office by a mixer he was cleaning, little did the company know that Friday the 13th, has struck. Dhuve was buried on Thursday (05/02/26), at Makanya village, Chirumhanzu.
Chihanga was one of the workers who was also helping the deceased on that cleaning duty, committed suicide by throwing himself into a moving car, today ( 07/02/26) at Mayo, Village 1, Summerton.

Chihanga allegedly left a suicide note imploring his wife suggesting that they should not the vehicle driver for running over him.
“I watched the company from a distant as they were constructing the Chaka to Masvingo highway. Before the company starts duty, every employee must fill a daily task sheet. The sheet asks you if you are able to do the duties you are tasked to do that day. If the employee doesn’t understand what he/she is supposed to do, one is moved to a department which he or she is familiar with. If an employee comes without a helmet, gloves, goggles, safety shoes, bibi, proper branded Masimba worksuit, you are deemed absent from duty. It also educates its employees on disaster management and also how to avert it,” said Edwin Bvute from the area who was at the scene of the accident.
He also suggested that whenever such an incident happens there should be serious counselling for all those involved to post traumatic disorder.
