MBERENGWA-Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe run Masase High School in Mberengwa District, Midlands Province has finally elected a new School Development Committee ending five years of waiting.
The school last conducted SDC elections in 2019 and the new leadership is tasked with improving standards at the mission school, The Midweek Watch has learnt.
Masase High is located 80km from Mberengwa Office and 34 km from Gwanda Town in Mat South Province.
The elections came after parents complained about among other things, sub-standard food being given to pupils and poor ablution facilities.
The new committee is comprised of chairperson Fortune Musasa, vice Chrispen Verenga, secretary Mr Bushe, Treasurer Mr Gomba and committee member Maud Ngwenya.
The new committee has its work cut out for them as sources claim that the school is in a sorry state thanks to years of neglect and corruption.
However, Albion Masukume, the school head denied the allegations leveled against the administration.
The school is said to have no running water because of Zimbabwe Electricity and Distribution Company’s transformer which was reportedly burnt down by lightning recently.
The school has been producing poor results reportedly due to a serious shortage of teachers although the head downplayed the issues and said they were not unique to Masase.
” We have been maintaining our O level pass rate at around 55% from 2021 and A level in 2021 it was above 95% and 2022 it was 100% so how can people complain about poor results. We have teachers on contracts and they are paid by the school, SDC and this has helped to ease teacher shortages” said Masukume.
