MILLICENT HUNGWE
Masvingo–A man shocked villagers when he approached his in-laws while wielding an okapi which he planted into his neck as they refused to return his estranged wife.
The horrific incident happened in Matsamba Village under Chief Nyakunhuwa, after Phillip Zinjeke (49) allegedly took his own life following a disagreement over his estranged wife on October 8 at around 5:15 PM.
ZRP Masvingo Province acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu told The Midweek Watch that Zinjeke visited his mother-in-law’s homestead demanding the return of his estranged wife, Edith Gwezuva (41).
Patinyu said Zinjeke arrived at the home holding an open okapi knife pressed against his own neck, a move that immediately alarmed his mother-in-law.
Out of fear, she ran to a neighbour for help.
The two returned moments later only to find Zinjeke lying in a pool of blood, with a deep neck wound.
The okapi knife was found beside him.
Police officers swiftly attended the scene and transported the body to Ndanga District Hospital, where the case is now under investigation.
While the full circumstances surrounding the incident remain under probe, early indications suggest a possible suicide linked to emotional distress following a separation.
“This tragic case adds to the growing number of suicidal incidents being reported across the province, we are urging communities to seek counselling and peaceful resolution of domestic disputes.
“There is no need for violence,” said Assistant Inspector Patinyu.
“We continue to encourage people to talk to trusted individuals, church leaders, or counsellors during times of conflict or mental distress,” he added.
