MIDWEEK REPORTER
NYANGA-JOSEPH UPENYU Mandiyamba (47) of Mutamararo Village under Chief Saunyama in Nyanga sunk an adze (mbezo) into the left eye of his live in girlfriend, Privilege Garufu (34) of Sagukutwe Village under Chief Hata killing her on the spot.
Joseph went on to hang himself in a vegetable garden about 1.5km from Privilege’s homestead.
Manicaland province acting police spokesperson assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the two were living together at Privilege’s homestead and Joseph was employed at Nyanga District Hospital.
On March 22 the two arrived from drinking beer at around 11pm and retired to bed.
The following day Philemon Pfidzai Ndodo (73) of Sagutukwa Village under Chief Hata went to his garden and proceeded to greet Joseph whom he had mistaken for Shepherd Sagukutwa of the next garden.
Philemon had not realised that he was talking to a dead man hanging from a tree and when he got closer as he had not received a response that is when he found out it was a dead person.
When he discovered that it was Joseph who was hanging from a tree branch he went to inform other villagers.
As they were going to the garden Privilege’s son, Prince Chekwa (14) rushed to the villagers and told them that her mother was lying lifeless in a pool of blood in her bedroom with injuries all over her body and an adze stuck into her left eye.
The matter was reported to Nyanga Police who attended the scenes and took the bodies to hospital for postmortem.
