Man bludgeoned to death in CBD

GWERU–A man believed to be homeless was found dead early Monday morning in Gweru’s Central Business District after his head was crushed with a stone while he slept on a shop veranda. 

Nsingo’s body lying next to the stone used to kill him.

The Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, which occurred along 8th Street.

“The now deceased, identified as Forget Nsingo, whose age is yet to be confirmed, was found lying in a pool of blood with the left side of his head deformed. A blood-stained stone weighing approximately five kilogrammes was recovered near his body,” said Insp Mahoko.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Nsingo had earlier been drinking beer with a friend identified only as Terrence, who is also believed to be homeless and staying within the city centre. 

The two reportedly had a quarrel during the night. 

Insp Mahoko said Nsingo later returned to the veranda where his wife, Rufaro Savanhu, and their two children, aged four and three were asleep. 

The police head that his wife discovered the body in the morning and alerted the police. 

Officers from Gweru Central Police Station attended the scene and cordoned off the area for investigations. 

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

 Police have since launched a manhunt for Terrence, who is reportedly on the run.

“We appeal to anyone who may have information that could assist in the investigation to contact Gweru Central Police or any nearest police station,” Insp Mahoko added. 

The body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. 

Police have urged members of the public to resolve disputes amicably and refrain from acts of violence.
