ZVISHAVANE – ln a bid to curb drug and substance abuse in the small mining town of Zvishavane, the junior soccer league has kept a number of youngsters busy during the school holidays.
The league is meant for the under 14s, 16s and 18.
Currently the league has nine registered teams which are Shining Stars, Fleming Arrows, Ezinkulu, Mambo Jephitar Academy, Pioneer, Hustlers, ZRP, Unit 11 and Firehouse.
Six games have been played by the under 14s since the closing day of schools and it is the Mambo Jephitar Academy on top of the log table by virtue of a superior goal difference, tied on 11 points.
The academy, based on the outskirts of the town in Nil Township is doing wonders in keeping the youngsters occupied.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch the owner of the academy Mambo Jephitar said resources are limiting the potential of the youngsters.
“Drug and substance abuse has become rife in Zvishavane, the junior league is meant to curb such tendencies however resources to support the young lads are limited, we need parents to step up and assist”, he said.
