This year’s Lowveld Heroes Open Chess tournament was heavily subscribed with some players coming from as far as Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru. About 58 players from different areas participated in the tournament that was held at Westwood Lodge in Chiredzi yesterday
Lowveld Chess Club hosted the record-breaking tournament since its formation.
The tournament was open to everyone, sex and age and two players from outside Chiredzi stole the limelight.
Tapiwa Jele of Masvingo walked away with the first prize money of US$125 after garnering 6.5 points. Roy Mwadzura from Harare tallied with Jele on the top position and also pocketed the same amount.
The first prize was initially promised to get US$150 but because of the tie, the money was revised.
The tournament was also attended by schoolchildren from Triangle and Chiredzi schools. The youthful players were resolute during the games and some of them went home smiling after winning some prizes.
Under 15 Best Player, accolade was scooped by Kudzanai Chitanga while Chiredzi-based medical Doctor Nhamo Chivhuru scooped the 30-49 years category.
Isabel Masawi won the best Female player award while Lowveld Chess Club Chairman Asaniel Chauke scooped the 50 years and above category.
Jonathan Mpamombe Muusha who is the hosting Club Secretary General jailed the success of the event and went on to appeal to the corporate world to support the sport.
“As a club, we are very delighted to the Lowveld business community for supporting us. We are however appealing for more donations because Chess is growing in Chiredzi as evidenced by the number of participants this year”, he said.
