The child, who was abducted on his way home from school on October 16, has been found alive and in good health, but the suspect remains at large.
According to a police press statement released on October 25, the suspect, identified as Takudzwa Chagwiza (24), returned the boy during the early hours of October 22 at around 3:38 AM.
The suspect reportedly carried the child on his back under the cover of darkness and left him approximately 500 metres from his father’s homestead before vanishing into the night.
The victim was quickly taken to the hospital where he was assessed and found to be in a healthy state.
Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the kidnapping are still ongoing.
ZRP Masvingo Province deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu urged the public to avoid allowing children to accept gifts, lifts, or favours from strangers, and emphasized the importance of early education on personal safety.
He also appealed for public assistance in locating the suspect, Takudzwa Chagwiza, so that justice can be served.
