MUTARE CITY-Mutare based division two side, La Sakubva FC is celebrating its 24th anniversary today as football excellence, community pride and youth empowerment stands as a powerful symbol of what grassroots football can achieve when passion meets purpose.

Founded in Sakubva in 2002, the club has grown from a small community initiative into one of the most respected development institutions in the border city. For nearly a quarter of a century, La Sakubva FC has been more than just a football team it has been a home, a shield and a foundation for hundreds of young boys.
Over the years, La Sakubva FC has produced some of the finest football talent in Zimbabwe, including Warriors goalkeeper Washington Sekuru Gudo Arubi, Onisimo Bhasera, among many who came through the hands of Timothy Masachi.

At the heart of this journey is veteran Mutare coach Timothy Masachi, whose vision and leadership have anchored the club’s philosophy. Masachi, a long-time advocate of grassroots development, has consistently championed structured football pathways as a tool for youth empowerment. Under his guidance, La Sakubva FC has sustained community leagues, coaching clinics and mentorship programmes that have positively transformed countless lives.
However, as the club marks its 24th anniversary, it faces one of its toughest challenges yet — financial strain. Rising costs of equipment, transport, registration, player welfare, threaten the sustainability of this transformative program.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch Masachi highlighted the challenges that have been hindering the club to progress well.
“Since the formation of this club we have produced one of the best players and some have gone beyond borders but we are hindered by limited resources to effectively run our club. We rely on donations and sometimes well-wishers,” said Masachi.
In response, the club has launched the “$24 for 24 Years Challenge”, calling on club legends, former and current players, parents, supporters, business partners and community leaders to donate US$24 or more in recognition of the club’s 24 years of service to the nation.
He further said If 100 supporters take up the challenge, the club will raise over US$2,400 a critical boost toward stabilising operations and ensuring that young players continue to access safe and structured football development. The club believes the response will go far beyond the minimum target.
For La Sakubva FC, this fundraising initiative is not merely about money. It is a commitment to safeguarding children through sport, investing in Mutare’s football future and honouring a legacy built on unity and resilience
