CHIREDZI-As part of its efforts to attain municipality status, Chiredzi Town Council has started a project to construct the crucial Inyathi road in the central business district.

The council’s decision to take on the project comes after years of waiting for government intervention which has been slow to materialize as contractors abandoned the project long time ago.
The Inyathi road has been in a state of disrepair since 2019 when it was initially awarded to WRR Master Specialists Construction.
However, the project was abandoned before work could begin and subsequent attempts to re-tender the project have been met with significant delays. While other government-funded road projects were approved for the year, the Inyathi road was left out potentially pushing its construction to the following year.

Faced with the prospect of waiting for another year, the Chiredzi Town Council decided to take matters into its own hands.
According to Council Chairperson, Cllr Jameson Charumbira after calling out for tenders they realized that they could complete the project at a lower cost than previously quoted by other contractors. Moreover the council is confident that it has the necessary expertise and resources to deliver a high-quality road.
“After doing our own quotations we realized that it’s actually way cheaper than others were offering to do the job we also have every requirement and the right people for the job. The government and other stakeholders will be helping and guiding us throughout the process,” said Charumbira.
With a clear plan in place the council aims to complete the project within a month, work will commence from Inyathi Garage to ZESA and progress will be closely monitored.

If all goes well the council will proceed with the rest of the project ensuring that the Inyathi road becomes a model of efficient and effective local governance.
