GWERU-There is increased activity in the city of progress following announcement that President Mnangagwa will be officially bestowed with the Freedom of City anytime this week.
President Mnangagwa is expected to receive a scroll to show his acceptance of the Freedom of the City from Mayor, Cllr Hamutendi Kombayi.
The freedom of the city is an honor given by a local authority to either a person (civilian) or a military unity in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the city.
In an interview with the Midweek Watch, the city’s spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed that the President will be honored by the local authority for his sterling contribution to the city.
“As the local authority we have honoured him because of the works he has done for the local authority. Looking at the liberation struggle for the Independence of Zimbabwe and also the second Republic’s devolution thrust.
“In view of the above, they have helped to ensure that our city is beautified hence we decided to confer him with the Freedom of the City status,” said Chingwaramusee.
In November last year, councilors resolved to award the freedom of the city status to the President.
During the meeting councillors unanimously rescinded the 695 Ordinary Council resolution which shot down the conferment to honor the President.
The honor only sailed through after three Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) aligned councilors were recalled by the MDC-T party for insubordination and disrespecting the Mayor.
The recall gave the leeway for MDC-T councilors to fast track the approval of the President’ honor.
In 2020 Victoria Falls conferred the same status to President Mnangagwa.
