MILLICENT HUNGWE
Nyajena –The Mapanzure community has been plunged into mourning following the mysterious death of Lucy Chanhuwa (67), wife to respected local leader, Mapfumo Dhobha Chatikobo, also known as Headman Mapanzure from Village 3 in Ward 19, Nyajena on July 11.
Chanhuwa, who had been complaining of persistent headaches, is believed to have left her home in search of spiritual healing in Chivi, her place of origin, but she never made it back.
Speaking in a low, sorrowful tone, Headman Mapanzure recounted the heartbreaking turn of events.
“On June 30, I went to Masvingo for our meetings, l had no idea it would be the last time I’d see her.
“She told me she wanted to go to Chivi for prayers,” he narrated to The Midweek Watch on the phone from his base.
“When I returned, she was gone, I thought she’d come back the next day, but days passed without a word. I started fearing for the worst.”
His fears became reality nearly two weeks later.
According to Masvingo Provincial ZRP Spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, a report was filed at Muchakata Police Station after Chanhuwa was reported missing.
On July 11, at approximately 5:30 PM, her body was discovered in a bushy area in Chiredzi, just 20 metres from the road.
“The body was in an early stage of decomposition,” said Inspector Dhewa. “It was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital Mortuary where a postmortem was conducted.”
Family members, who had already filed a missing person report, positively identified her body.
Chanhuwa’s young brother-in-law and family spokesperson, Wilson Sherekete Chatikobo, said the family was devastated.
“We are in pain, but we laid her to rest with dignity. We pray for healing and strength during this time,” he said.
As investigations continue, the family hopes for clarity and justice, while they mourn a woman whose final journey ended in mystery and sorrow.
