GWERU- A nurse -in-charge at Tumbire Clinic in Lower Gweru has been sentenced to five years in prison for brutally attacking a villager with a machete in a love triangle case.
Henry Mathumbu appeared before the Gweru Regional Magistrate Christopher Maturure facing attempted murder charges.
Prosecutor Monica Mungwena told the court that the accused Henry Mathumbu struck Mbonisi Mlambo with a machete after he had confronted him for allegedly having an affair with his wife.
The court further heard that Mlambo had approached the accused person to ask why he was having an affair with his wife. The confrontation resulted in a serious altercation.
During the argument, Mathumbu invited Mlambo inside his tuck-shop so that they discuss the issue man to man.
Mlambo agreed and after entering the tuckshop, Mathumbu picked up a machete which he used to struck Mlambo all over the head.
Mlambo suffered severe head injuries, bleeding profusely. He was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he was treated.
Mathumbu after committing the crime fled the scene and was arrested in Maboleni where he was hiding in another tuckshop.
Passing judgement, Magistrate Maturure condemned the brutal attack which he described as barbaric. He said Mathumbu also violated his ethical responsibility tied to his nursing profession.
“The committed offence which only resulted from a personal misunderstanding is a betrayal by someone sworn to serve lives,” he said.
The regional Magistrate sentenced Mathumbu to five years in prison suspending two years on condition of good behaviour.
