BIKITA – A teacher at Birivenge High School in Bikita is living in fear after a brother to one of the students allegedly pulled a pistol and threatened to kill him for disciplining his sibling.
Bikita District Schools Inspector James Mahofa told The Midweek Watch that he only came across the matter on social media, but does not have an official report.
The school head, Johannes Chitumba’s mobile phone was not getting through and was said to be attending a National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) meeting in Harare.
Ashel Madzamba the teacher who was allegedly assaulted confirmed the matter and said he has not reported for duty and is living in fear after the incident.
He told The Midweek Watch that he was on duty on Tuesday and was manning the school gate with another teacher around 9am and had closed the gate to bar students who had come late for school from entering.
They were giving corporal punishment to all the students before they entered the gates and he alleges that when a form 4 student identified as Abel Mangwaya arrived he refused to be punished and started to insult the teachers.
Madzamba said he dragged the student nearer him and gave him two strokes and ordered him to go to his classroom but instead he bolted out of the school and promised to come back with his brothers to revenge the spanking.
While he and the other teacher were still doing their duties two men entered the premises and headed to where the teachers and one of them grabbed Madzamba by the neck and started assaulting him.
Madzamba said he only identified one of the man as Shepherd Mangwaya who is a brother to the student and is a tout at Nyika while the other is said to be a returnee from South Africa.
The deputy headmaster tried to refrain the trio before one of the student’s brothers pulled out a pistol and pointed it to Madzamba threatening to kill him before Shephered restrained him and dragged him away.
Madzamba said he reported the matter at Nyika police base and was ordered to go and seek a medical report.
He said he is living in fear and is staying at Duma location in Nyika Growth Point as he is afraid of going back to Birivenge which is some 7km away.
Impeccable sources said the alleged returnee from South Africa has since vanished from the area with some suspecting that he went back to South Africa.
