ZVISHAVANE – The second edition of the Great Dyke Athletics Club marathon bankrolled by Agric 24 has been moved to a date to be advised soon.
The event was initially slated for October 21, 2023, in Zvishavane.
This will be the second marathon race that the two entities are to hold after their marriage in 2021.
The latest development was confirmed by the club coach Maliakini Makunganya.
The race has been designed to accommodate clubs from Shurugwi, Gweru, Gwanda, ZRP Buchwa, Masvingo and Zvishavane.
School pupils aged 15 and above have been given the nod to participate in the marathon race while the walkathon remains a preserve for local participants.
In the inaugural race, Munyaradzi Zizhou of Masvingo won the 10km race pocketing US$100 with Zvishavane’s Lordbismar Mathe coming second position.
Nkulumo Dube won the 30km mountain bike ahead of Maxwell Masuku.
Great Dyke Athletics Club was founded in 2015 by former athlete-Stephen Phiri, Maliakini Makunganya, Kudakwashe Gwatirisa and Miriam Magwizi. The club has 30 athletes from nine years of age.
Meanwhile, Agric 24 is an Agribusiness with a focus on input supply and extension advisory support services, which was founded in 2020 by marketing expert Prosper Chinyakata and his partners.
Makunganya said the event has been postponed to pave the way for other events that will be taking place at the same venue.
“I regret to inform you that the Great Dyke Athletics Club half marathon and mountain bike race initially slated for 21st October 2023 at Gresham primary school in Zvishavane has been moved to a later date to be advised soon. The reason for the postponement is to allow other events that will be taking place at the same venue to prevail smoothly. We feel it’s best to re-evaluate the event so we can best serve all our participants. We sincerely regret any inconveniences caused,” Makunganya.
