Granny devours cooked granddaughter flesh for rituals

In a chilling and deeply disturbing case, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Chegutu have arrested a 52 year old woman, Veronica Mudzipuri on allegations of murdering her four year old granddaughter, Tawanayasha Kadhene, for suspected ritual purposes.

The incident, which occurred in Shurugwi has sent shockwaves across the nation due to the gruesome nature of the crime.

According to police reports, Mudzipuri who is an artisanal miner, allegedly put a maize pesticide pill in the now deceased’s maheu drink, causing her death.

The accused is said to have cut flesh from the child’s cheek, mixed it with herbs prescribed by a traditional healer (sangoma), cooked the mixture and consumed it as part of an alleged ritual.

Authorities apprehended the suspect on the 26th of August 2025 and she is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Police have condemned the act and urged communities to report any suspicious or harmful practices linked to rituals or traditional beliefs that may endanger lives.

The case is expected to proceed to court as investigations continue.
