Grandpa drowns collecting firewood

Date:

‎An elderly man from Kupuka Village under Chief Mazungunye in Bikita tragically drowned on 15 July 2025 while fetching firewood alone near Mujiche River.

‎The deceased, Murindiwa Peter Zivanai (72), reportedly left his homestead around 8 AM, leaving behind his wife, Senzeni Rizive (64). According to family sources, he had gone to collect firewood by the river.

‎At approximately 2 PM, a fellow villager passing through the Mujiche River spillway discovered Zivanai’s body floating in the water, with a bundle of firewood nearby.

‎Eyewitnesses noted bruises on his palms and slippery marks near the riverbank, suggesting that he may have struggled to save himself after slipping into the water.

‎The body was retrieved and transported to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is currently awaiting post-mortem examination.
