MASVINGO – Grade 3 pupils from Council run Runyararo Primary School have put together their meagre resources and donated food stuffs to Mucheke Old People’s Home.
Everlast Mtikani, Judith Muromba and Sela Saratiere the teachers for grade 3 classes, pink, white and red respectively accompanied their pupils to practise what they teach them in particular on Family, Religion and Moral Education (FAREME).
Mtikani told The Midweek Watch that this was an initiative by the teachers so that they put into practice what they teach in FAREME as a subject.

“For us to come here it was a collective idea which we started to put into practice what we teach every day in FAREME as a subject so that our students grasp what we teach them in theory, hence the donation to Mucheke Old People’s Home,” said Mtikani.
“As three classes we came together and managed to collect mostly basic commodities worth about US$500 that are usually needed in any household and spent the day entertaining the elders during the visit since they rarely get visitors at the home,” she added.
Muromba also added that they also played games, danced to music with the elderly, there was story telling from the elderly and also the students had to sweep the yard to maintain cleanliness.
Satiere said that this was the first time that they have done such a thing and they wish to pay frequent visits to the Old People’s Home and offer a hand where possible.
She also said they are planning to visit historical Provincial Heroes Acre and Muzenda Cultural Home so that the learners get to know about their cultural heritage.
Mucheke Old People’s home acting superintendent Laina Mudambi told The Midweek Watch that they are very excited and delighted by what the children did for the elderly.
“We are very grateful for the kind gesture that these young children have shown for us and the elderly because they do not get much visitors and entertainment hence this is appreciated,” said Mudambi.
“I hope some schools and other people will emulate what these children have done because they have shown love and realised that the elderly need help in a lot of aspects hence we applaud the school for allowing them to do this.”
Mudambi also took the opportunity to appeal for a vehicle for the home’s errands as well as ferrying the inmates to hospital as they frequently fall sick due to old age.
