GCC’s Churu appointment rectified as he survives horrific crash

GWERU-The Midlands Province capital, Gweru City Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Finance director, Livingstone Churu as acting Town Clerk until further notice following the suspension of Vakai Chikwekwe on corruption charges.

The decision was passed by on Wednesday 22 February 2023 during a special Council meeting.

Chamber Secretary, Chikwekwe was the acting Town Clerk and is being investigated by the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission for allegedly flaunting procurement regulations.

Chikwekwe was requested to recuse himself from duties and not to interfere with the investigations until the matter is finalised. 

Gweru City Mayor, Cllr Hamutendi Kombayi congratulated the newly appointed acting Town Clerk after the special Council meeting at the chambers.

“I hope that the newly appointed Town Clerk will serve Gweru City to the best of his ability. I wish him all the best in driving the train of service delivery to the residents,” said Cllr Kombayi.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Churu was on Monday involved in a horrific road traffic accident which left the car he was driving a complete write off but managed escape with no injuries

Gweru City Council public relations spokesperson, Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed the accident and added that the acting Town Clerk was involved in an accident a day after his appointment.

The US$176 000 Toyota SUV which was bought by the former Town Clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza in 2019 and has been a bone of contention between Gweru Council and former Mayor, Josiah Makombe who has sued the local authority claiming the vehicle as part of his exit package.

Makombe exited office in 2021 after he was recalled by MDC T led by Douglas Mwonzora.
