KWEKWE-Police in Midlands have confirmed a case of sodomy which occurred in Kwekwe between the months of July and early September 2023.
It is alleged that during the month of July on an unknown date James Mapawu (40) of Narrans Building in Kwekwe met Praise Mpofu (25) of Ridgemont Gweru who was dressed like a woman at a night club in Kwekwe.
Mapawu proposed love to Mpofu who agreed and they began to stay together at Mapawu’s residence where they had anal sexual intercourse several times.
On 7 September 2023 as the two were having ana sex a misunderstanding ensued resulting in Mapawu making a Police report .
However, police attended Mapawu’s residence and discovered that the two suspects had been staying as husband and wife.
“The crime of Sodomy where men engage in sexual acts with other men is a serious crime according to the laws of the country. However, investigations are still ongoing ” said Midlands Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.
In Zimbabwe, same sex marriage is prohibited under the Criminal Law Act 2006, which criminalises acts of ‘sodomy’. This provision carries a penalty range of between 1 to 8 years jail term.
