MBERENGWA-Village 6 under Chief Bvute in Mberengwa District is recording significant improvement in water access and education support following community development initiatives by chrome processing company, FS Mining.

The company recently funded and supervised the drilling of a borehole at the centre of the village to address long-standing water shortages. For years, residents relied on distant and seasonal water sources, a burden that fell heavily on women and children.

Chief Bvute commended FS Mining for engaging traditional leadership before commencing operations and for investing back into the community.

“FS Mining approached us as traditional leaders, explained their plans and sought permission before starting mining activities. That respect is important. We are pleased to see them supporting our people, especially through water provision and assistance to our school children,” he said.

Village Head, Dhuvai Chenyika said the borehole would significantly improve their livelihoods as they now fetch the precious liquid nearby and constant availability.

“This project will reduce the distance travelled to fetch water, improve sanitation and help prevent waterborne diseases. It brings much-needed relief to our community,” he said.

In addition to improving water access, FS Mining partnered with Zvikombe Primary School during this year’s inter-house athletics competitions. The company sponsored cash prizes and grocery hampers for learners who came first position in various track events.

Deputy Head, Trust Mpofu said the sponsorship boosted morale and motivation among pupils.

“When learners know that their efforts are being recognised, they get motivated to perform better. The prizes in the form of hampers also assist families in our rural communities. We appreciate this partnership,” he said.

Parents who attended the event described the initiative as a positive step that promotes talent development at grassroots level while strengthening relations between the mining company and the community.

FS Mining Community and Stakeholder Officer Mabutho Sithole revealed that the company is working towards establishing the FS Foundation, which will provide school fees assistance, learning materials and basic necessities to orphans and underprivileged children in local schools.

The company is also engaging stakeholders on plans to rehabilitate roads in Village 6, which often become difficult to use during the rainy season.

Through these initiatives, FS Mining is positioning itself as a development partner in Mberengwa District. The projects align with the Government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which promotes inclusive growth, infrastructure development and private sector participation in community upliftment.

For residents of Village 6, the impact is already visible, improved access to clean water, motivated learners and renewed hope for better infrastructure.
