Chaos, scarcity and lack of confidence in the newly introduced ZwG has caused unprecedented financial disaster in the country.
Majority of Zimbabweans haven’t touched the new currency. In rural areas ZwG is totally like a “foreign currency”.
In Mutare combis are still using the old Bond note as change. The value of the Bond note is not determined by market forces. In Masvingo Province the ZwG coins scarcity has forced the South African Rand to be the preferred currency.
Masvingo Province in rural areas people use the Rand and US$ only. The ZwG hasn’t found its way into rural areas. It will be difficult to convince a rural traditional beer brewer to sell in local currency he or she has not seen.
The community have lost faith in the local currency. The government might try to paint a picture that the local currency exchange rate is stable. True, it might seem to be stable but reason is that the local currency isn’t in circulation.
