MASVINGO CITY-Passersby, socialites and shoppers were left shell shocked after a Toyota D4D twincab ploughed through the Diyo Grocery Shop rooftop as it allegedly tried to avoid a head on collision with a Toyota Harrier.
The fatal accident which is believed to have killed two women on the spot and another at Masvingo Provincial Hospital happened at around 5pm today at the dust road intersection of Cloverly as one approaches Diyo Shops near Thuderun Scrap Yard.
The Zambian registered D4D is said to have had six people on board including the driver and two children.
Zanu PF losing candidate for Masvingo Urban Constituency, Wellington Mawende who was at Diyo during the time of the accident expressed shock and advised drivers to be cautious especially when driving facing the sun in unfamiliar places.
“I was seated at the restaurant when I heard a bang and saw the car in the air as it was rolling, throwing out its occupants as it hit the roof of the shop.
“The driver of the D4D lost control of the vehicle about 50m from Diyo Shops as she was trying to avoid a head on collision with a Harrier which was turning into Cloverly from Diyo Shops.
“It is quite shocking and unbelievable because the way it happened was just movie style. It is difficult to believe that the vehicle which was coming here was travelling at that speed.

“Its unfortunate that lives were lost and we urge motorists to exercise caution on the roads especially in areas that one is not very familiar with.
“I think there is need to put age ceiling on drivers because I heard the driver of the Harrier is quite an elderly woman,” said Mawende.
ZRP Masvingo spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he had not received the report of the fatal accident.
Another eye witness Christopher Chibhamu, said they heard a bang and saw a wheels flying on top of the roof as the car was rolling.
“I have never seen anything like that in my life, it was as if I was dreaming, the whole place was engulfed with dust and people started running in all directions as they were not sure where the vehicle was heading to.
“Wheels were flying everywhere with two of them going into the bush and have not been found by now.
“The other side of the shop and the roof sheets were also damaged by the flying D4D,” said a distraught Chibhamu.
Egifa Mupezeni aka Magumbo who operates a restaurant at the popular joint could not hold back her tears as this reporter approached her for a comment.
“Sekuru zvakaoma, chiregai ndirengedze, mashura wa handisarti ndamboaona muupenyu hwangu.
By the of posting the story, Thunderun towing vehicle was in the process of removing the wreckage from the entrance of the shop.
