CHIREDZI-As the 2025 farming season approaches, Chiredzi District Acting Agritex Officer, Fungai Jeke has called on farmers in the Lowveld to begin early preparations to ensure a productive agricultural season.

Speaking to The Midweek Watch, Jeke stressed the importance of aligning farming decisions with updated weather forecasts, urging farmers to stay informed and consult local extension officers regularly.
“Farmers must take time to understand the seasonal forecast and choose crops and varieties suitable for local conditions. Weather patterns are becoming increasingly unpredictable, so making informed decisions is critical,” said Jeke.
She also emphasized the need to adopt conservation agriculture techniques, particularly the government supported Pfumvudza/Intwasa model which has proven effective in enhancing yields in dry regions like Chiredzi.
“Start preparing Pfumvudza plots early. This method helps conserve moisture and improve yields, especially in drought prone areas,” she said.
In addition to crop preparation, Jeke encouraged farmers to secure all necessary inputs before the onset of the rains including seeds fertilizers and chemicals.
Jeke highlighted livestock care as a key area often overlooked during crop focused preparations.
“Farmers must invest in proper housing for small livestock and construct strong kraals for cattle. This ensures their animals are protected from harsh weather and disease,” Jeke added.
With early planning, support from extension officers and climate smart practices, Jeke believes farmers in Chiredzi and beyond can achieve better harvests in the upcoming season despite ongoing climate challenges.
