CHIREDZI-Chiredzi District Agricultural Extension Officer, Tongai Bodi has urged farmers to take advantage of the current planting window period for cereals and pulses while there is still residual moisture from recent rains.

Speaking to The Midweek Watch Bodi said the timely planting of field crops is crucial to ensure good germination and crop establishment before the next rains.

“We are still in the planting window of our cereals and pulses. We encourage farmers to timorously plant their crops before the rains return,” he said.

He also warned of increased pest infestations during this time of the season, particularly in cereals.

“Fall armyworm might be imminent. Farmers must work closely with agricultural business advisory officers to get the correct and recommended chemicals. Using the same chemicals repeatedly could lead to residual resistance,” said Bodi.

Bodi emphasised that farmers should pay attention to planting depths based on grain size, advising against sowing crops too deep.

“For cereals, the smaller the grain, the shallower the planting depth should be,” he noted.

He further encouraged farmers to utilise Farmer Field Schools, localised learning hubs set up in villages where they receive hands on training on best agricultural practices.

“These schools are crucial in equipping farmers with knowledge on crop-specific practices and pest control methods. Village heads and local authorities should work closely with business advisory officers to make these interventions effective,” he said.

Farmers under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme are reportedly wrapping up their preparations while horticulture producers are being advised to use the rains to reduce irrigation costs and start preparing for the market.

Bodi also reminded farmers to stay updated on weather patterns to avoid losses or injury during the rainy season.
