MILLICENT HUNGWE

MASVINGO –A 74 year old blind man from Nhondovari village under chief Mazungunye died in an inferno after his bedroom hut caught fire while his wife  and children were  away attending an all-night prayer church service

Jacob Musimwa (74) perished in his hut, which was engulfed in flames on 2 August.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe, Dhewa said Musimwa’s wife left him in the care of their two children aged 16 and 13-yearsold to attend a church service.

On the fateful evening, Inspector Dhewa said at around 11pm the children left their blind father sleeping beside a fire in the hut to join their mother for the night vigil.

Tragedy later struck and church members then noticed flames coming from the direction of Musimwa’s hut.

They rushed to the scene, only to find that the hut’s roof had collapsed, and despite their efforts, they were unable to extinguish the fire and Musimwa had already succumbed to the blaze.

Inspector Dhewa said there was no foul play suspected but urged the community to exercise extreme caution during this fire season.
