Harare–Education minister Torerayi Moyo has outlined Zimbabwe’s commitment to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the country’s education system while preserving core human values.

Education Minister Dr Torerayi Moyo.

The minister acknowledged the transformative potential of AI, noting that it can enable personalized learning experiences and automate routine tasks, allowing educators to focus on nurturing the holistic development of learners.

However, he also emphasized the need to address the challenges posed by the integration of AI, including the digital divide and the importance of upholding ethical standards.

To realize this vision,  Moyo said his ministry will focus on several key priorities, including empowering teachers through professional development initiatives, equipping learners with AI literacy and promoting ethical AI use.

“The ministry will equip educators with the skills to effectively integrate AI into their classrooms, ensuring that technology amplifies, rather than replaces, their agency,” said Moyo in a statement marking the International Day of Education.

The minister added that the ongoing programs, such as the e-Learning initiatives and the provision of ICT infrastructure in schools, will continue to expand to ensure equitable access to technology across the country.

Minister Moyo emphasized the importance of embracing AI as a tool for empowerment, rather than a source of fear, and called on all stakeholders to work together in harnessing its potential to enhance learning while staying true to the values that define Zimbabwe’s humanity.

“Education must remain a deeply human endeavor, one that transforms lives, builds communities, and upholds the rich heritage of our nation,” the minister said.

”Together, let us shape a future where technology complements human ingenuity, fostering an education system that is both innovative and grounded in the spirit of Ubuntu.”
