DRC unity gvt imminent as Thsisekedi feels M23 heat

Date:

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi is set to establish a unity government, his spokesperson announced on Saturday.

DRC President Felix Thsisekedi.

This move comes as he faces mounting domestic criticism over his administration’s response to the ongoing offensive by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the eastern provinces.

The M23 insurgency, which has led to the capture of large areas in eastern DRC, including regions rich in minerals, has sparked concerns of an escalating conflict.

Some opposition figures have even speculated that Tshisekedi’s presidency could be at risk.

Addressing members of the ruling Sacred Union coalition on Saturday, Tshisekedi urged unity, emphasising that internal disputes should not distract from the country’s pressing security challenges.

“We must stand together to confront the enemy,” he stated.

Presidency spokesperson Tina Salama later confirmed that Tshisekedi would be forming a government of national unity and reshuffling leadership within the coalition.

However, she did not provide specifics regarding the changes.

Since the beginning of 2025, the DRC military has suffered consecutive setbacks in North and South Kivu, leading to growing criticism of the government’s military strategy.

Opposition leader Hervé Diakiese dismissed Tshisekedi’s plan, arguing that it was politically motivated.

“Tshisekedi is focused on securing his power, while we are focused on saving the country,” Diakiese said. “That mission can continue with or without him.” ONLINE
