NKAYI-Police in Nkayi have arrested two security guards in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred on 30 November, at DGL5 Mine in Inyathi.
The incident, which claimed the life of one illegal miner and left another injured, has shocked the local mining community and raised concerns over security practices at mining sites.
According to police reports confirmed by ZRP National Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspects Mbekhezele Ngwabi (52) and Elisha Matsvai (45), were on duty when they allegedly opened fire on a group of illegal miners who had confronted them, demanding the release of their friend who had been apprehended earlier for illegal mining activities.
Mbekhezele Ngwabi reportedly shot Thabo Ngwenya (24) with a 12-bore rifle, striking him in the chest and neck.
Tragically, Ngwenya died while being transported to the hospital, meanwhile, Elisha Matsvai allegedly shot Nkosikhona Moyo (19) in the eye and left arm, leaving him with serious injuries. Moyo is currently receiving medical treatment.
Commissioner Nyathi reiterated the police’s stance on the responsible use of firearms and urged security personnel to act within the confines of the law.
He also confirmed that investigations are underway and that the suspects will face charges of murder and attempted murder.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police continues to warn against taking the law into one’s own hands and encourages all parties involved in mining disputes to seek lawful means of resolution.
