MILLICENT HUNGWE
Tragedy struck Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, when a four-story building suddenly collapsed, claiming the lives of 13 people with 84 being rescued.
The devastating incident has left many in shock, and rescue teams are working tirelessly to save those still trapped under the rubble.
Rescuers have managed to establish contact with survivors, providing them with essential supplies like water, glucose, and oxygen through small openings The Midweek Watch has confirmed.
The sound of tapping from within the debris has given hope that more lives can still be saved, and rescue efforts continue around the clock.
This disaster bears an unsettling resemblance to the 2013 building collapse in the same city, which resulted in 36 fatalities.
In that incident, poor building design and substandard construction materials were cited as primary causes.
In response to the current tragedy, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered a thorough inspection of all buildings in the Kariakoo area, where the collapse occurred.
The President added that authorities must investigate the buildings near the collapsed structure to determine the cause of the collapse and ensure accountability.
