Masvingo Provincial Combat Sports Committee (MPCSC) has appointed a committee, chaired by Olivarth Guviriro to oversee the growth of the sport in the province.
The primary purpose of the board is to strategize the future development of boxing and wrestling in the province, encompassing both amateur and professional categories.
Fredrick Matavikwa will be the deputizing Guvuriro, Yeukai Chigwenya is committee member administration, Yvonne Shumbanhete committee member resource mobilization, Tawanda Zishiri committee member finance and former world boxing champion, Charles Manyuchi is a special advisor to the committee.
The selection of the committee members was supervised by Kudakwashe Tapera, the Provincial Coordinator for the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (PCZNBWCB).
The PCZNBWCB’s main role is to provide secretarial services and technical guidance for the growth of boxing and wrestling.
Wrestling, alongside boxing, falls under the jurisdiction of the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, which is tasked with regulating, controlling, and supervising these sports across the country.
While wrestling has not been as popular in Zimbabwe like soccer or cricket, the Zimbabwe Wrestling Federation has been actively working to promote and develop the sport.
The federation organizes local tournaments and participates in international events to provide Zimbabwean wrestlers with exposure and experience.
As part of its efforts to foster wrestling talent in different regions of the country, the Federation has now established it’s presence in Masvingo province.
The board’s decision to set up a provincial coordinating office in Masvingo signifies the importance of fostering wrestling talent in this region.
Although specific historical events or achievements related to wrestling in Masvingo are not readily available, it is clear that the province, along with the rest of Zimbabwe, aims to grow and develop the sport through the organized efforts of the governing bodies.
