Class 2 drivers to undergo additional testing

Harare -As part of efforts to curb carnage on the country’s roads the Government has introduced changes to holders of Class 2 Drivers License.

Minister of Transport and infrastructure Development, Felix Mhona said additional testing on eye sight and other biometrics was necessary before one is granted a professional class 2 driving license.

“In the wake of many fatalities on the country’s highways, government through the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) now requires those would-be professional truck drivers to undergo additional testing.

“These include eye sight and other biometrics, to get a Professional Drivers Permit and Defensive Driver’s Certificate consolidated into a single card.” he added.

Mhona also said that professional drivers will be progressively certified unlike the current scenario whereby one instantly becomes a professional driver on obtaining a Class Two driver’s disc.

The upcoming new driver’s license is fully compliant with the standards specifications of Southern African Development Community (SADC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and EAC as this demonstrate the government’s commitment to harmonize and standardize driver training.

“Our new drivers licence system is fully operational, all drivers who would have passed their driven competences test will be to receive the new licenses within seven days,” said Mhona.
