CHIKOMBA-Queens of Chivhu Chess Club dominated the Crystal Candy under 16 chess tournament which was held at Prince Edward in Harare over the weekend where over 300 learners participated.
The club bagged two gold medals after their most prolific player, Grace Zvarebwa (11) who is doing form 1 at Liebenberg in Chivhu scooped the trophy and a gold medal.
For her efforts she went received $80 in cash prize and a food hamper and another gold medal came from Lynne Chidanire who won the under 12 category.
The club was represented by 12 players in different categories namely Lynne Chidanire, Patricia Madziva, Elizabeth Ngwarati, Natalie Chaibva, Natalie Manunure, Lynne Simango, Tinovimba Makoni, Denzil Manunure, Emmanuel Manunure, Tinofara Mudenga, Tadiwa Mudenga and Grace Zvarebwa who won the under 16 category.
Other winners from the club were Lynne Simango who won the silver medal in the under 16 category and Patricia Madziva who won the bronze in the under 10 category.
Founder and coach of Queens of Chivhu Chess Club Godknows Dembure said he was proud of his team’s performance. Dembure also expressed gratitude to the organizers of the tournament for giving youngsters the opportunity to interact and compete with others.
“I would like to express my gratitude to owners of Crystal Candy for giving youngsters the opportunity to interact and compete as well as showcasing their talents.
“I am really proud of my team which is comprised of young girls, for instance Grace who is turning 12 this year but she competed well against those older than her and went on to win the category,” said Dembure.
Queens of Chivhu Chess Club has participated at national tournaments in recent years. The club has also attended some international tournaments.
