Chirundu clearing agent in cells for fraud

Date:

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Progress Matengaifa, a clearing agent at the Chirundu Border Post, on charges of fraud and obstruction of justice.

Matengaifa is accused of facilitating illegal importation of cement into Zimbabwe, in violation of Statutory Instrument 89 of
2021 which banned the importation of cement in order to promote local cement
manufacturers.

ZACC received a tip-off about the smuggling of cement through the Chirundu Border Post using forged documents. Upon investigation, a truck carrying cement was intercepted. The truck had been processed by Matengaifa.

Investigations revealed that Matengaifa fraudulently used a Bill of Entry previously used for importing tiles. Matengaifa is also accused of assisting the truck driver to escape, thereby obstructing justice.

The accused was arrested on 26 September 2024, and is set to appear before at Chinhoyi Magistrates Court.
