CHIREDZI-In a significant development towards combating child marriages, traditional and religious authorities in Chiredzi have expressed a firm commitment to eradicate the scourge during a dialogue session facilitated by Shamwari Yemwanasikana with backing from Amplify Change.
The event, conducted in Mupinga village, Ward 4, convened a diverse assembly of stakeholders, including male participants, community leaders, and clergy from six wards, to critically examine and confront harmful cultural practices that facilitate underage marriages.
Ekenia Chifamba, the director of Shamwari Yemwanasikana, confirmed the development to The Midweek Watch that a pivotal outcome was the public commitment made by the village headmen to enforce more stringent penalties in local tribunals against individuals who infringe upon the rights of minors, specifically those facilitating child marriages, accepting bride prices for minors, or entering into marital arrangements involving individuals under the legal age of majority.
Additionally, these leaders underwent training focused on enhancing the mechanisms for reporting instances of child marriage, alongside a commitment to disseminate protective information within their congregations and the broader community.
“The dialogue has demonstrated that systemic change is achievable when cultural and faith leaders assume responsibility. We are witnessing tangible repercussions for offenders, which is crucial for fostering grassroots momentum to safeguard every child,” said Chifamba.
Notable traditional leaders present included Forward Tsuvuka, Doroth Hasani, Ezekiel Sithole, and Sabhuku Ingwani, all of whom endorsed the HeForShe movement and pledged to continue raising awareness on this critical issue within their jurisdictions.
This initiative highlights the effectiveness of localized engagement in translating discussions into actionable directives and enforcing the law.
