GWERU – Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in which a 6-year-old boy Shayne Mafu was killed after being hit by a Gweru City Council refuse truck on May 24, 2025.
According to the Midlands province police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the accident occurred at around 11:00 a.m in the Clifton park high-density suburb.
The UD refuse truck was being driven by Phillip Makotore.
“Circumstances around the incident are being investigated to establish prosecution evidence for culpable homicide,” Inspector Mahoko said.
The young victim was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary.
Police are working to determine the exact cause of the accident as they build a case.
GCC spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee confirmed the incident and echoed police statement.
“Yes it’s true. It’s very sad. However, I cannot say much as of now the matter is under investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” she said.
