CHIKOMBA-Chief Mutekedza born Andrew Zhakata held an annual mini party for disabled people in Chivhu, Chikomba District at his homestead on Friday last week attended by 30 families.
Chief Mutekedza handed out clothes and prepared meals for the families and said he was maintaining the tradition of something that he started some 13 years back where the disabled get together and make merry as they don’t normally get such opportunities at large gatherings like Independence and Heroes Day celebrations because of their condition.
“They are always left out on crucial national gatherings because of their condition so back in 2011, I decided to hold a mini party annually for them, where we drink and eat together, just having fun together. This is all is possible because of the Almighty who provides,” said Chief Mutekedza.
The event was also graced by Zanu PF candidate for Chikomba West Constituency and former Studio 263 actress, Tatenda Mavetera who went on to donate goodies to the disabled as part of her birthday celebrations.
Mavatera donated 10 kg cornmeal, vegetable seeds, 2kg sugar, salt, and green bar soaps to each of the beneficiaries who were at the Chief’s homestead.
She told The Midweek Watch that she decided to join hands with Chief Mutekedza in giving back to the community.
“I have donated these to the disabled because I feel it is the duty of those who are able bodied to help the disabled, they cannot do many things on their own and we must help them out so they won’t feel to be outcasts in society,” said the aspiring MP Mavetera.
Mavetera recently won the Zanu PF primary elections where she floored Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr John Mangwiro for the right to represent the ruling party in the August 23 general elections where she is likely to face a Citizens Coalition for Change candidate who is yet to be named by Nelson Chamisa the party president.
