MIDWEEK REPORTER

HARARE-The indecent assault case against Chiefs Council president and Pan African Parliament boss, Fortune Charumbira has taken a new twist as he has been allegedly summoned by Harare police to give a statement.

The Midweek Watch is reliably informed that Chief Charumbira and his lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku were allegedly spotted at Harare Central Police Station where they had gone to give a statement on Thursday last week.

“Charumbira visited Harare Central this morning and spend about 3hours inside with his lawyer giving a statement on the alleged indecent assault case filed in Masvingo by his niece last month, the Police are on the case and very soon he may appear in court,” said the source.

Efforts to get a comment from Professor Madhuku who has become the lawyer of choice for high profile cases in Zimbabwe were fruitless as his mobile phone was not being answered.

The Midweek understands that the 27 year old complainant has also been summoned by the Police in Harare for indications at the alleged crime scenes which implies that the matter maybe referred to court any time from now as soon as the investigations are complete.

National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told this publication today that they are still carrying out investigations and will issue out a statement as soon as they have finished.

Family sources are saying Professor Madhuku is allegedly advocating for an out of court settlement at family level as this involves close family relatives.

Chief Charumbira was reported to the Police by his 27 year old married niece for indecent assault where he is accused of fondling her breasts, kissing her and touching her private parts at a top hotel in Harare on March 31 this year.

The incident allegedly happened while the niece, a teacher at a top boarding high school in Masvingo Rural District was on an educational programme in Mazowe at Grace Mugabe High School when Chief Charumbira invited her to a top hotel in Harare where the incident happened.

The case was referred from Masvingo where it was initially reported to Harare for investigations where the offence was allegedly committed.
