Whilst many see a cellphone as a communication instrument, Zanu PF sees it as election rigging instrument.
Parliament must enact a law or amend the Electoral Act to make sure it is illegal for a voter to enter a polling station with any type of phones.
The secrecy of the ballot is under threat. In rural areas and to people who oppose Zanu PF the cellphone has been used to instill fear and violate the secrecy of the ballot.
Zanu PF targets those known opposition members and those they aren’t sure of their ballot cast to shoot pictures of their ballot paper after voting. After taking pictures as evidence of where they would have casted they are guaranteed safety, donated vote buying goodies and assurance of other promises.
Zanu PF has used this tactics during 23 August 2023 and various by elections since then. ZEC must protect the secrecy of the vote. The Multi – Party Liaison Committee must agree on the need for the security checks of cellphones.
The voter is unwillingly taking those pictures of voted ballot paper. This is a high degree of intimidation, coercion and rigging which Zanu PF has adopted of late.
