CHIREDZI-The Citizens Coalition for Change rally which was supposed to be held today at Tshovani Stadium in Chiredzi today was called off as anti-riot Police denied the opposition supporters entry into the stadium.
There were ugly scenes around the stadium as supporters and Police clashed sending people in all directions as they scurried for cover from tear smoke.
Tempers flared and retreating angry supporters started throwing back stones at the Police and this prompted the police to throw more tear smoke in the high density suburb’s streets affecting residents and innocent bystanders as well as those who were going about their business.
The CCC president, Nelson Chamisa did not show up at the stadium as the Police claimed that the rally was not cleared by the law enforcement agency.
According to the letter from ZRP Chiredzi in our possession dated July 3, 2023, Police cited shortage of manpower as there was a State function that was being attended by the Minister of State for Provincial affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province, Ezra Chadzamira at the same time.
“Unfortunately there will be a state occasion on 05/07/23 for the official opening of Rusununguko Clinic in Chiredzi by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo Province where all the resources are focused.” read part of letter.
